Thoughts on “memory”
I ask that the books be prepared so that you do not have to look at the music stand to read the music. In your teaching, you want to look at your students, and they at you. In our learning laboratory of these classes, it is the first time that you can experiment with how that feels and work with an experienced teacher to polish your demonstration. In my first year of teaching Suzuki, I did not bother to really learn the pieces from memory to teach. It was not an efficient or productive way to teach and even embarrassing to me to ask my students to learn in a way that I was not prepared to do. I have since decided never to “teach” anything that I haven’t experimented with myself, and that includes learning by listening. The dividend, I have found, is my memory has improved every year since I was 30 years old—quite amazing to me. You will find the class is quite supportive of everyone’s efforts—we laugh a lot!

BOOK 2
Dates: June 4 to 13
Times: June 4, 5, 11, 12—9 to 12. June 6 12:30 to 3:30 Additional times for the practicum
Cost: $385

This SAA course requires ECC and Book 1. The class contains: 15 hours of class, 8 hours of online observation, a book report, a wrap-up and playing the book for me from memory (practical). When you send your $100 non-refundable deposit, I send you the materials so that you are prepared for the class on day 1. I find this preparation allows the class to go deeper into the material during class. Group class teaching is discussed. The SAA is experimenting with adding a Teaching Strategies component to the Book 2 course. I am offering this as a separate course described below. The feeling is that giving teachers an opportunity to teach for comment and discuss that process should happen earlier rather than later. This is standard in the South American teacher training courses.

CELLO TEACHING STRATEGIES 1
Dates: June 15 to 17
Times: 9 to 12:20
Cost: $115

This 10 hour course offers teachers at the beginning of their pedagogy study the opportunity to discuss components of teaching style and present a demonstration lesson(s) for comment. You will prepare two fifteen to 20 minute lessons—individual and/or group by video. I am hoping to provide students for you to teach, if you do not yet have a studio. Each lesson should start with an opening activity (tuning can occur before the video); tone/sound development; review; new material, and the closing activity. Give attention to working with the parents and the assignment(s). We will use the Descriptors used in evaluating teacher training candidates. I find what I suggest most often to new teachers is 1) talk less (70% playing, 30 % talking) 2) make sure the assignment is clear 3) remember to smile! This does not replace the SPA course or the Practicum course—it is just a guided experience in developing your teaching style.

When video became available decades ago, I started regularly video-taping myself teaching. It was a revelation to see what I thought I was doing and what actually came across. This has defined my process—and I am still learning!
I look forward to developing this course with you.
